How To Care For And Maintain Your Chain Link Fence

Chain Link Fence Maintenance

Chain Link fencing is a great value option for security for your home. With regular maintenance, you can enjoy your chain link fence for years to come.

Monthly Checkups

Regularly inspect your fence for signs of rust, particularly at joints and connections, and promptly address any corrosion. Tighten loose nuts, bolts, and screws to maintain the fence’s structural integrity. Clear debris such as leaves and branches along the fence line to prevent damage and preserve its appearance. Test the operation of your fence’s gate by opening and closing it several times, and lubricate hinges if necessary.

Seasonal Maintenance

Clean your fence using a mild detergent and a soft brush or sponge, rinsing thoroughly with water to remove dirt and grime while avoiding abrasive materials. Inspect the tension wire on your chain link fence, adjusting it if necessary to maintain proper alignment. Consider applying a rust inhibitor or paint, especially if you live in a humid or corrosive environment, to protect the fence from rust.

Annual Maintenance

Depending on its condition, recoat or repaint your fence to maintain its appearance and provide extra protection against rust. Inspect the fence posts and rails for damage or instability, replacing any damaged components to ensure stability. Trim overgrown vegetation around the fence to prevent damage from plants pushing against it. Check the gate’s hardware, including latches and locks, and replace any worn or damaged parts to maintain security.
