Homeowners are often torn between cedar and vinyl fencing. On the one hand, the low maintenance and durability of a vinyl fence is terribly alluring — especially in the rainy Northwest. On the other hand, there’s something timeless and attractive about the natural look of wood.
The consumer market has long demanded vinyl fencing that better simulates the look of wood. Rick’s is pleased to announce its two newest vinyl fencing colors: Weathered Cedar and Redwood.

More and more homeowners are catching on to the benefits of vinyl fencing, and interest in wood alternatives is on the rise. We experienced the latest example of this recently at the Home & Garden Idea Fair in Vancouver, where visitors to our booth were evenly split between wanting vinyl and cedar fences. People were especially curious about our new darker color of residential vinyl fencing, which we debuted at the show.
But visitors were more than just interested–many of them came with measurements and photos of their yards in hand, ready to book an appointment with us for an on-site quote! Summer is on its way, the economy is perking up, and homeowners are ready to get going with their fencing and decking projects.

Vinyl fences are so well-known for their strength and durability, jaws tend to drop when serious damage occurs. Still, it happens. The good news is, if you do accidentally damage your vinyl fence, repair is usually possible. But the majority of vinyl fencing disasters can be prevented by keeping these three things away from your fence at all costs:
1. Lawnmowers and weed-whackers. Yes, many a mow-happy homeowner has veered a little too closely to clip those last few inches of grass and discovered lawnmowers can leave black marks on vinyl fencing. And you don’t even want to know what kind of damage a weed-whacker can do. Be extra cautious anytime you’re using power-assisted garden tools around your fence. (If you do slip up and leave tire marks, try removing them with lacquer thinner.)

Homeowners who are busy (or lazy–we don’t judge!) love vinyl fences. Compared to wood, they’re a cinch to care for. Now, don’t get us wrong. We highly recommend the beauty (and smell) of a natural cedar fence. In most cases, the choice between wood and vinyl really depends on the homeowner’s priorities.
But sometimes… Sometimes a vinyl fence is just plain better. Don’t believe us? Here are four situations in which we believe vinyl fencing outperforms wood:

As the cold winter months melt into spring, there’s no better time to rejuvenate your garden. Garden Center Magazine has identified some of 2010’s most popular gardening trends to watch for in the coming months:
- Green gardens. It may seem redundant, but this year, gardens are going green. According to Garden Center Magazine, it’s possible we’ll start seeing plants and garden products with labels indicating any chemicals present, whether recycled material was used and how much fuel was used in transportation to a nursery. To complement your sustainable garden, read up on chemical-free fence maintenance.
- Letting your personality shine. Expect to see gardens vibrant with originality. The rise of the home-centric “staycation” means creative types will be looking for ways to make their gardens truly unique. To best frame your one-of-a-kind garden, consider adding a custom-designed vinyl accent fence for a unique touch.
- Gardening for health. It’s an accepted fact that tending a garden affords mental clarity, physical well-being and increased air quality. Some plants even have the ability to filter common allergens out of the air, potentially saving you money on over-the-counter allergy remedies.
- Native plants. Easy-care plants that require little maintenance are expected to be popular in 2010. Most notable is the concept of using plants native to your area in garden designs, as opposed to branching out to more exotic types. Native plants are already acclimated to the local climate so they’re easy to tend, plus they have lower transportation costs for a lower overall carbon footprint.

Your vinyl fence doesn’t require much maintenance (which is probably why you chose it), but after the elements take their toll, your fence will need a little TLC every now and then. Plenty of cleaners on the market claim to work on vinyl fencing, but here’s a secret they don’t want you to know: You don’t need to buy a special cleaner or dump more chemicals into the environment.
For the most part, durable vinyl fencing is simple to clean. Dirt is your biggest enemy, while mold is a close second. Mold and mildew can collect even on non-porous vinyl fencing, particularly in moist regions such as the Northwest.
