Just because nasty weather is right around the corner doesn’t mean you have to resign yourself to an ugly yard all winter long. Most people assume that once their flowers die there isn’t much more they can do to beautify their landscape. Oh, how wrong they are! Here are a few tips for keeping your yard and garden beautiful all winter long:
Lights
Most people put up decorative lights around the holidays, but there’s no reason you can’t use string lights to brighten up your yard all winter long. Use small white lights for a delicate effect, or try Japanese-style lantern strings to a give your pergola a soft glow. Remember to hide the lights well, though – visible string lights can seem a bit tacky during the day.

A pergola is a simple and cost-effective way to add shade to your deck or patio and take advantage of the vertical space in your yard. One of the things that makes pergolas so versatile is that they can be customized to complement the individual style of your home or garden. Here’s a look at several vinyl and cedar pergola styles adapted from regions around the world:
Rustic: This is the most basic cedar pergola style and has been popular for generations. Constructed mostly of cedar or vinyl, the rustic pergola features solid beams with simple, open rafters and is great for supporting climbing plants. Though simple, rustic pergolas can add striking light and shade patterns to any deck or yard. This adaptable style can take on different flavors depending on what climbing plants are used, but it’s best suited to gardens with a rugged, wild or natural feel.

The phones at our Salem store have been ringing nonstop since the Salem Mid-Valley Yard, Garden & Patio Show last weekend, where Rick’s once again displayed our popular pergolas and composite decking.
Since then, we’ve been swamped with requests for on-site estimates and have had to bring in extra manpower from other Rick’s locations to handle the increased interest we received from the show. What a great place to be!

Tuscan-style design is hot in 2010, and many homeowners are eagerly looking for ways to incorporate old-world flavor into their décor. The good news is it doesn’t take a lot of money to add a hint of Italy to your landscape.
Building a pergola is one of the simplest and most effective ways of bringing European charm to your backyard. A pergola is a decorative structure made up of pillars supporting crossbeams for an airy, open-roof shelter. Pergolas can be used to mark transitions from one part of your yard to the next, or to help define an outdoor living space such as a deck or patio.

Add a dash of romance and European style to any landscape this spring with a 3-tier cedar pergola during the March sale at Rick’s Custom Fencing & Decking. Our 14′ x 16′ pergola, available now for only $750, is the perfect complement to any lawn or garden. Here are three things we love about pergolas:
They’re inexpensive, easy to install and offer a huge impact at low cost.
- Their open structure provides the perfect place for trailing woody vines and climbing plants such as clematis and wisteria.
- They can instantly transform a deck, patio or part of your lawn into inviting outdoor living space.

Rick’s staff could barely keep our booth from flying off the floor at the 63rd annual Portland Home & Garden Show, where attendees were so impressed with our Port Orford cedar deck and pergola display they kept offering to buy it on the spot!
Hundreds of people requested on-site project estimates at the show, which took place Feb. 24-28 at the Portland Expo Center, and others stopped by to discuss their spring and summer home improvement projects or just to thank us for the beautiful decks we built for them in the past. Based on the interest we received–and the unprecedented volume of visitors to our retail showrooms lately–it’s going to be a busy building season for Rick’s.

It looks like 2010 will be a big year for decks and pergolas, if the hundreds of people who flocked to our booth at the Yard, Garden and Patio Show are any indication.
Rick’s Custom Fencing & Decking made a big showing Friday through Sunday at the Oregon Convention Center, where we demonstrated the significant benefits a deck or fence can bring to any home. Our booth featured two of Rick’s flagship decks, including the Port Orford cedar deck, complete with a pergola. Port Orford cedar is one of the highest grade woods available for use in decking, and Rick’s is proud to be the only fencing and decking company that uses it in construction.
