The decking industry has spent decades trying to perfect a low-maintenance decking material for homeowners who don’t want the hassle of refinishing a cedar deck. Now that composite decking has achieved widespread acceptance, it’s time to meet another new kid on the block: PVC decking.
Unlike wood-plastic composites, PVC decking is made entirely from a cellular vinyl material that’s lighter than cedar or composite, yet resists sagging and is strong enough to stand up to the elements. Thanks to advancements in technology, some brands of PVC decking, such as Endeck, come in an array of colors to match your home and even feature an embossed wood texture so consumers don’t have to sacrifice aesthetics for durability.

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about hardwood decking materials. Exotic hardwoods such as Ipe are known for their hardness, density and durability, but does that make them better suited to your construction project than domestic softwood?
Not necessarily. Here are a few reasons why softwoods such as Port Orford cedar decking may still be the preferred building material for you:

Chain link fences are widely used by homeowners for a number of reasons; they’re inexpensive, offer great security, are essentially maintenance free, and last a long, long time. While all types of fencing materials have their own advantages and uses, here are three things chain link fences do better than any other fencing material:
1. Dog Kennels: Chain link makes the perfect fence for keeping in dogs and other small animals. The visibility of the fence allows animals to see out and not feel too “fenced in,” while the chain link material holds up well against chewing and clawing. Plus, chain link is strong and can hold in even the most determined pet.

A pergola is a simple and cost-effective way to add shade to your deck or patio and take advantage of the vertical space in your yard. One of the things that makes pergolas so versatile is that they can be customized to complement the individual style of your home or garden. Here’s a look at several vinyl and cedar pergola styles adapted from regions around the world:
Rustic: This is the most basic cedar pergola style and has been popular for generations. Constructed mostly of cedar or vinyl, the rustic pergola features solid beams with simple, open rafters and is great for supporting climbing plants. Though simple, rustic pergolas can add striking light and shade patterns to any deck or yard. This adaptable style can take on different flavors depending on what climbing plants are used, but it’s best suited to gardens with a rugged, wild or natural feel.

Let’s face it: Lattice fencing has a reputation for being a bit … cute. While lattice fencing may make you think of your grandmother’s rose garden, many landscape designers are using lattice in hip, modern ways. Here are three fun, practical ways to incorporate lattice fencing into your landscape design scheme.
Purely Decorative
The most obvious way to use lattice fencing is for decoration. If you have a solid privacy fence, try running about 6 inches of lattice trim along the top to give your fence an ornamental look. Lattice is also a great way to make a gate stand out from the rest of a solid privacy fence. Don’t overdo it, though; a little lattice can go a long way.

It’s one thing to build a deck from the ground up, with the ability to design the space to meet your personal needs. It’s another to buy a home with an existing cedar deck and have to make do with what you’ve got.
If you’re unhappy with your existing deck but can’t afford to replace the whole thing, one option is to update your deck with new custom handrails to help create an outdoor living space you’ll appreciate. As the market for backyard decks has grown, manufacturers have created a vast array of deck rails to choose from. Handrails for your deck now come in a variety of materials, from aluminum to glass to stainless steel cable, and can be included in any new deck design or added onto an existing deck for a fresh, new look.

Fences come in all sorts of different shapes, sizes and materials. With certain fence styles in much greater demand than others, it makes sense to offer several standard, widely available options. Some fences even come in prefabricated sections for fast and easy installation.
While most homeowners these days opt for a more cost-effective, standard type of fencing, some are just aching to build a one-of-a-kind custom cedar fence. Often these are fences the homeowners have designed themselves, sometimes using elements they’ve seen in other fences.

There’s so much talk about cedar and vinyl these days, it seems aluminum fencing tends to get lost in the shuffle. Yet aluminum is one of the most versatile, durable and stylish fencing materials available.
Aluminum fencing was developed as a replacement for wrought iron, which is just too heavy and expensive for practical homeowners these days. Aluminum offers a similar look to wrought iron, but it’s affordable, lightweight and rust-free. It also requires almost no maintenance, so you’ll never have to worry about staining or sanding. Plus, it’s customizable — you can choose the picket width, the size of the gaps between pickets, the color, and any decorative embellishments you want to include.

Homeowners face so many decisions when planning a new deck build, they can easily become overwhelmed. But one question that often remains unaddressed is the issue of deck fasteners.
Deck fasteners are the hardware that’s used to connect your deck boards to the structural framework. Most contractors will automatically use a certain type of fastener unless the customer requests an upgrade. This is fine, but as a homeowner it’s important to know the different options that are available to you.
