Rick’s Fencing and Decking Donates Fence Materials to Turner Flood Victims

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Rick's Turner Donation of Fencing MaterialsTurner, Oregon residents suffered widespread flooding on January 18th. With river waters rising two and a half feet over the town’s bridge, and more than 100 homes damaged by flood waters, it quickly became clear that Turner needed help. However, because the town is so small, federal funds could not be obtained. Things weren’t looking too good for this hamlet in the Willamette Valley.

Fortunately, local residents and businesses stepped up. Rick’s Fencing and Decking joined KUPL’s “Rebuilding Turner” campaign, which asked for donations of non-perishable food, cash donations, and building supplies. Rick’s Fencing and Decking donated a truckload of fencing materials—enough to erect a 100-foot fence.

Rick’s was happy to step in and fill the gap. To help protect the children at Stepping Stones from nearby construction and other hazards, we donated the cedar fence materials and labor required to secure the yard with a new cedar fence.

Fence Installation Spotlight: Salem’s Deepwood Estate

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Every now and then we’re captivated by the unique or artistic way a yard or garden makes use of its fence installation. Salem, Oregon offers a perfect example of this creativity in its historic Deepwood Estate.

Built in 1894, the Deepwood Estate is an ornate, Queen Anne-style home with 5.5 acres of unique, carefully planned gardens. In the 1930s, the owner hired the Northwest’s first female landscaping firm to design the estate’s English-style gardens; the result now stands as the only remaining publicly available example of the landmark firm’s work.

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Navy Corpsman Darren Miller had just returned from his deployment and moved his wife and two kids into their brand-new dream home in Pasco when he was called away yet again, to Afghanistan. Although the home was complete, the backyard was not. With no fence or lawn installed, the yard failed to meet city codes, news station KNDU reported.

“The backyard was just all dirt, so people people just kind of got used to walking through, and just kind of coming in my backyard. It was a little concerning,” said Jennifer Miller, whose husband is not expected home until Thanksgiving. “Dogs come in the yard in the middle of the night, and I find giant footprints.”

Rick’s Donates $1000 to Little League Team to Replace Stolen Equipment

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Who would steal from a little league team?! That’s the first question that ran through many viewers’ minds when they saw KPTV’s story, “Thieves Steal from Little League Team,” on Wednesday’s 10 o’clock news. Portland Little League team The Iron Pigs had two bags of equipment stolen last Tuesday night. After practice, their coach parked his truck at the Plaid Pantry on SW 65th and Foster while he worked his graveyard shift. He returned to his truck the next morning to find that someone had jimmied open his back hatch and stolen two out of three of the Iron Pigs’ equipment bags. In all, the stolen equipment was worth $1000.

The team borrowed equipment to play Wednesday night’s game, but it wasn’t clear whether they would have to forfeit Saturday’s game for lack of bats, gloves, and protective gear. “I’m just disappointed in the community, because I know that Portland can be a better place with people that are responsible,” 11-year old Iron Pig Zander Lyons explained in a KGW story. “We are kind of down because our stuff got stolen. So we’re not doing so well but we’re working our way through,” added Iron Pigs catcher Zack Hurst.

building a fenceFences serve a variety of purposes. They can protect property, pets and children. They can add aesthetic appeal to a landscape design. And they can help improve a community.

A great example of the latter is this year’s ShareFest Tri-Cities. Last month, some 3,000 volunteers came together on a Saturday to tackle 91 different community improvement projects – among them a large, coordinated effort to build a fence for an off-leash dog area at Badger Mountain Park.
