Building a Cedar Deck Box

With winter just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about how you are going to store all the beautiful chair cushions and deck accessories you’ve amassed over the summer. Wouldn’t it be great if you could build a beautiful cedar deck storage box in a few easy steps? Well, now you can!

The great folks over at BobVila.com have put together a how-to video on building a cedar deck storage box. It includes step-by-step instructions and plenty of pro tips for building a storage box that’s both practical and attractive. Here’s what you need for the project:

1-inch screws
Drill
Router
Square, combination
Cedar stock
Wood gluing clamp
Dado blade
Pencil
Router fence
Table saw
Wood glue

The first part of the project involves measuring, marking and cutting the various pieces of cedar. This includes cutting the 2×6 boards, cutting away the stock, and measuring, cutting and matching the angles of the corners. Once you have all the pieces prepped you can start putting the box together.

Once the pieces are all measured and prepped correctly, assembling them should be a relatively easy operation. You’ll want to first dry-fit everything together. If everything fits, then you can start gluing. Clamping the joints will help strengthen the glue bond. So will letting it sit overnight. Once everything is glued, screw three 1-inch screws into each corner for added strength.

Voila! You have just made a beautiful cedar deck storage box that also doubles as an extra deck bench.
